What is a content gap?
A content gap is the set of keywords and topics your competitors rank for while you don't appear at all.
Open this screen in the panelA content gap is the keywords and topics your competitors get traffic from but your site has no matching page for, or has a page that doesn't rank at all. If you pick competitors that genuinely serve the same audience, this list becomes "questions your users ask that you don't answer".
Why it matters
- It grounds new content ideas in data instead of guesses: demand (search volume) exists and a competitor has already proven the topic can rank.
- Keywords several competitors share are the topics the industry treats as basics; missing them often affects how authoritative you look.
- Combined with keyword difficulty and search intent, it separates quick wins from long projects.
Where you see it in SEOAsist
On the Competitors page:
- Find competitors detects competitors from shared organic keywords, or you add them by hand.
- Sync all fetches the keywords your competitors rank for.
- The Content gap table lists keywords where competitors rank in the top 20 and you're not in the top 100; those shared by the most competitors come first. Filter with Min. volume and Max. KD.
- Track adds a keyword to your tracking list; Content idea adds it with the "gap" tag for content planning.
The data comes from DataForSEO Labs. SEO analysis also shows the gap as a finding. More: Competitors.
Example
| Keyword | Volume | KD | Best competitor pos. | Competitors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dining table size for 6 | 2,400 | 18 | 3 | 3 |
| oak table care | 880 | 12 | 5 | 2 |
The first row is a strong candidate: low difficulty, and three competitors rank for it.
Common mistakes
- Comparing yourself with big sites that aren't real competitors (dictionaries, marketplaces).
- Creating a separate page for every keyword on the list; group keywords with the same intent on one page.
- Copying keywords with a different intent (answering a competitor's informational article with a product page).
