What is a toxic link?

A toxic link is a backlink from a spammy or low-quality site that may bring risk rather than benefit.

A toxic link is a backlink from a low-quality source: spam sites, link farms, auto-generated content or unrelated foreign sites. "Toxic" is not an official Google term; it's based on a score that tools assign from spam signals.

Why it matters

  • Google ignores most spam links on its own, so individual toxic links usually don't drag your rankings down.
  • The risk grows if you bought the links or joined a link network; that can lead to a manual action.
  • A rising toxic share may point to a negative SEO attack or leftovers from an old agency, so it's worth watching.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

  • Backlinks → Toxic lists links with a DataForSEO spam score of 50 or more. The Toxic card on Overview uses the same threshold.
  • The same tab holds the Google disavow file card: use Disavow on a row to add its domain, then get the file with Download disavow file.
  • SEO analysis shows the toxic backlink count as a finding in the authority dimension.

Common mistakes

  • Panic-disavowing every link with a high spam score. The score is an estimate; open the source and look yourself.
  • Assuming toxic links caused a ranking drop; content or technical problems are far more common causes.
  • Trying to "clean up" links you bought only by disavowing them; ask for removal where you can.
