What is disavow?

Disavow is a text file and Search Console tool you use to ask Google to ignore specific backlinks or domains when assessing your site.

Open this screen in the panel

Disavowing is how you tell Google "don't count these links when assessing my site". You prepare a plain .txt file listing the URLs or domain: lines to ignore and upload it to the Links Disavow tool in Google Search Console.

Why it matters

  • Google recommends the tool only for genuinely harmful links: especially paid links, links from link networks, or links that led to a manual action.
  • Google already ignores most spam links. Unnecessary disavowing brings no benefit, and careless use can neutralise good links too.
  • A newly uploaded file replaces the previous one, and processing can take weeks.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

The Backlinks → Toxic tab has a Google disavow file card:

  1. Use Disavow on table rows to mark the domains for the file. New toxic links arrive already marked; switch one off to keep it.
  2. Download disavow file gives you a file of domain:example.com lines. Review it and remove any domain you want to keep.
  3. Open the Links Disavow tool in Search Console (search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links), select the property and upload the file.

SEOAsist does not upload the file to Google for you; that step is yours. More: Backlink sync.

Example

# Spam network, 2026-10
domain:free-links-4u.xyz
domain:casino-best-777.top
https://old-directory.net/furniture/page-12.html

Common mistakes

  • Disavowing hundreds of domains based on spam score alone, without checking.
  • Forgetting the lines from the old file when uploading a new one; the new file replaces the old.
  • Treating disavow as a cure for every ranking drop.
  • Uploading to the wrong Search Console property (www instead of non-www, for example).
