What is AI visibility?

AI visibility measures how often AI assistants mention your brand or cite your site when answering relevant questions.

AI visibility measures the outcome of GEO work: when AI assistants answer the questions your users might ask, how often does your brand come up and how often is your site cited? Think of it as the AI counterpart of a ranking position, except it's expressed as a rate rather than a single position.

There are two separate signals:

  • Mention: the brand name appears in the answer text.
  • Citation: your domain is among the answer's sources.

Why it matters

  • AI answers can change from run to run, so a single try proves nothing. The same prompts need to be asked regularly, across several engines.
  • Knowing which prompts you're missing from shows which content to strengthen.
  • Engines differ a lot; you can be cited by one and absent from another.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

On GEO · AI Visibility → Visibility:

  • Visibility share: the share of answers that mention the brand or cite the site.
  • The Total answers and Visible answers cards and the Weekly visibility chart.
  • The By provider table: Brand mentioned, Site cited and Share for each engine.

Citations in Google's AI Overviews are measured separately; see Google AI Overviews. More: GEO: AI visibility.

Example

PromptEngineBrand mentionedCited
Dining table for a small living roomEngine AYesYes
How to clean an oak tableEngine ANoYes
Extendable or fixed tableEngine BNoNo

Two of these three answers are visible: a visibility share of about 67%.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring with too few prompts and trusting the result.
  • Adding the brand name to prompts, which inflates the share artificially.
  • Tracking mentions but not citations; it's the source link that brings traffic.
