What is average position?

Average position is the mean ranking at which a page or site appeared in search results over a period.

Average position is the average spot at which your site appeared in search results. Search Console weights it by impressions: for every search where your site was shown, it takes the position of your topmost result and averages them all. 1 is the best value; the lower the number, the better the ranking.

Why it matters

The click gap between page one (top 10) and page two is huge. A change in average position can reveal the effect of content and technical work before clicks move. Keywords sitting at 11–20 are the quickest wins: small improvements can push them onto page one.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

SEOAsist shows two different positions:

  • Search Console position: the Organic Performance card on the Overview page and the Pos. column on Keywords → Search Console are averages over every impression in the period.
  • Tracked position: the Tracking tab runs one daily check per chosen keyword for a specific location, language and device; the top card shows the average position and the table shows Pos., the 7 days change and the Best position.

SEO Analysis also lists keywords at 11–20 as a “close to page one” finding. See Keyword tracking for details.

Example

If a query showed at position 3 one day and position 9 another day with equal impressions, its average position is 6, even though it may never have appeared at 6 on any single day.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing the Search Console average one-to-one with the rank you see in one city.
  • Watching the site-wide average; new pages entering at low ranks drag it down even while traffic grows.
  • Reading a bigger number as an improvement; for position, lower is better.
