What is a long-tail keyword?

A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search phrase, usually three or more words, with lower volume but clearer intent.

A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific version of a broad keyword. “shoes” is short tail; “women's waterproof hiking shoes size 7” is long tail. Each one has low volume on its own, but together they make up a very large share of all searches.

Why it matters

Long-tail keywords usually have less competition, so even new or small sites can reach page one. Because the user spells out exactly what they want, intent is clear and conversion rates are high. Long, question-style searches also look a lot like the queries AI assistants and AI Overviews answer.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

On Keywords → Research, type a Seed keyword and click Long tail. Up to 150 suggestions containing the seed are listed with volume, KD, intent and a 12-month trend. Select the ones you like and click Track selected to add them to daily rank tracking. Details: Keyword tracking.

Example

Seed: boiler service

Each of these is searched rarely, but together they can bring more traffic than the head term.

Common mistakes

  • Creating a separate thin page for every long-tail variation; close questions belong on one thorough page.
  • Ignoring keywords that show “no volume”; estimate tools can round very low volume down to zero.
  • Forcing the exact long-tail phrase into the text unnaturally.
