What is JSON-LD?

JSON-LD is the markup format Google recommends for structured data: a JSON object in its own script block, separate from the page's visible HTML.

JSON-LD (JSON for Linked Data) is one way to write structured data. Instead of being woven into the visible HTML, the markup sits inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag as a JSON object that uses schema.org types. Microdata and RDFa do the same job, but Google recommends JSON-LD.

Why it matters

  • It's easy to maintain: one block you can add, change or remove without breaking the design or template.
  • It can be added later through a plugin, tag manager or JavaScript. Google can process JSON-LD injected with JavaScript too.
  • You can combine several types in one block (for example Organization and WebSite).

Where you see it in SEOAsist

  • The No structured data (JSON-LD) issue in Technical Audit lists pages with no JSON-LD block at all.
  • The E-E-A-T site score looks at the JSON-LD types found in the last crawl (Organization, Article).
  • A JSON-LD rule on the site's Pixel tab adds a structured data block to matching pages. The rule field accepts an object or an array.
  • Articles generated in the content studio come with an FAQ and JSON-LD.

Example

An FAQPage block for a help page:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "How long does delivery take?",
    "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Orders arrive within 1-3 business days." }
  }]
}
</script>

Common mistakes

  • JSON syntax errors: one trailing comma or unclosed quote invalidates the whole block.
  • Forgetting the @context field.
  • Adding the same type twice from two different plugins, which produces conflicting values.
  • Adding the block once and never updating it (old prices, old address).
