What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the site root that summarises for AI assistants what the site is and which pages matter most.

llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file served at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It's a proposal defined at llmstxt.org: the first line is # Site name, followed by a short paragraph introducing the site and lists of links to key pages under headings. An optional llms-full.txt provides the full text of the content in one file. The idea is to let AI models reach the essence of a site without getting lost in menus, ads and scripts.

Why it matters

  • It describes what the brand does, where it operates and its key pages in one place, in your own words.
  • It's cheap to produce and doesn't affect any search result.
  • To be honest: llms.txt is not an official standard, and it isn't clear which AI products read it regularly. Google also states that no extra file or special markup is needed to appear in AI features such as AI Overviews. So treat it as an addition to good content and correct robots.txt permissions, not a replacement.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

Open the site from Sites and switch to the AI access tab:

  • Check now reads the file on the live site and reports llms.txt valid, llms.txt found, format doubtful or llms.txt missing; it checks llms-full.txt as well.
  • On the llms.txt card, Generate builds the file from the page titles of the last crawl; Generate with AI summary adds a 2–3 sentence site summary at the top. Edit the text, then Save, Download, or use Add via PR if GitHub is connected.

An llms.txt chip also appears in the status strip at the top of the site page. More: GEO brand check.

Common mistakes

  • Not starting with a # Site name line.
  • Letting the page list go stale, with links to deleted pages.
  • Treating llms.txt as the whole of your GEO work.
