What is organic traffic?

Organic traffic is the visitors who reach your site by clicking a non-ad result in a search engine.

Organic traffic is the visits that come from people searching on a search engine like Google and clicking your link in the unpaid results. Visits from paid ads, social media, email or people typing your address directly are not organic.

Why it matters

It's one of the clearest measures of whether SEO work is paying off. If rankings rise but clicks don't, something is missing. You don't pay per click for organic visits, so over time it's one of the cheapest channels you have. Sudden drops usually point to a technical problem, pages falling out of the index or an algorithm update.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

The Organic Performance card on the Overview page shows clicks, impressions, CTR and position from Google Search Console for the selected period, compared with the previous one. For query-level detail, open the Search Console tab on the Keywords page. SEO Analysis also raises a finding when clicks drop noticeably. See Overview dashboard for how to read the card.

note

This data needs the site's Search Console property connected: Connect Google Search Console.

Example

Your site got 4,200 clicks from Google in the last 28 days and 3,500 in the 28 days before, so organic traffic grew by about 20%. If impressions stayed flat over the same period, the growth most likely came from a higher CTR thanks to better titles and descriptions.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing organic traffic with total traffic; during a campaign total traffic can rise while organic falls.
  • Looking only at total clicks without checking which pages declined.
  • Mistaking seasonal swings for a problem; compare with the same period last year too.
