DataForSEO account not verified (40104 / HTTP 403)
Here's the fix if Backlinks, Competitors and Keywords return no data, or you see the “Your DataForSEO account is not verified yet” warning.
Open this screen in the panelUntil your account is verified, DataForSEO answers every data request with code 40104. Even with correct credentials, no backlink, competitor or keyword data comes through. When this happens, SEOAsist shows an orange “DataForSEO is not working” box at the top of the page and a notification under the bell icon.
Symptoms
- On Competitors, clicking Find competitors shows “Your DataForSEO account is not verified yet”.
- On Backlinks, Sync now says the sync is queued, but no data arrives. A few minutes later a “backlink sync failed” notification appears.
- Keyword research comes back empty.
Fix
- Sign in to app.dataforseo.com with your DataForSEO account.
- Complete the account verification steps shown in the dashboard (usually an email confirmation and a short profile form).
- Once verification is approved, return to SEOAsist and run the action again: Find competitors on Competitors or Sync now on Backlinks.
- After the first successful request, the orange warning box disappears on its own.
If your balance is too low after verification, you'll see “Your DataForSEO balance is too low” instead. Just top up in the DataForSEO dashboard; nothing needs to change on the SEOAsist side.
Still not working?
Could I have entered the wrong credentials?
In that case the error code is 40100, not 40104, and the warning says the credentials were rejected. Re-enter your API login and password (the API password from DataForSEO, not your account password) under Integrations → DataForSEO.
Do backlinks need a separate subscription?
On some accounts, DataForSEO's Backlinks API has to be enabled separately. In that case the warning shows code 40204 and says the required API subscription is not active. Enable it under Plans & Subscriptions in the DataForSEO dashboard.
Why is the warning box still there?
The box appears when the last DataForSEO request ended with an account-related error, and it goes away on the first successful request. After verifying, you need to run an action (a sync or competitor search) once.
