What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags are meta tags that set the title, description and image shown when a link is shared on social media or in messaging apps.
Open this screen in the panelOpen Graph (OG) tags are og:-prefixed meta tags in a page's <head>. When someone shares your link on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or Slack, the app reads these tags to draw the preview card: title, short description and image.
Why it matters
- OG is not a Google ranking factor. But you decide how a shared link looks, and a clean card gets more clicks.
- Without the tags, the app picks a random image or text from the page, or shows no preview at all.
- It keeps campaign, product and blog pages looking consistent with your brand.
- Some platforms such as X (Twitter) read their own
twitter:tags but usually fall back to OG values when those are missing, so OG is the common baseline.
Where you see it in SEOAsist
- The Missing Open Graph tags issue in Technical Audit (Info severity) lists pages without OG tags. The suggested fix is to add og:title, og:description and og:image.
- To fix it without code, create an Open Graph rule on the site's Pixel tab; it sets og:title / og:description / og:image / og:type.

Example
<meta property="og:title" content="Solid Oak Dining Table | Example Furniture">
<meta property="og:description" content="Seats six, solid oak, free shipping.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://examplefurniture.com/img/table-1200x630.jpg">
<meta property="og:type" content="product">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://examplefurniture.com/dining-table">
Common mistakes
- Using a relative path for og:image (
/img/table.jpg); it needs a full URL. - Using an image that is too small or has the wrong aspect ratio; around 1200×630 px is the common recommendation.
- Leaving the home page's og:title and og:image on every page.
- Updating the tags but not refreshing the platform's share cache, so the old preview lingers for a while.
