What is a title tag?

The title tag is the page title defined with <title> in the HTML, usually shown as the clickable blue headline in search results.

The title tag is the <title> element in a page's <head>. It shows in the browser tab and Google usually uses it as the clickable headline in search results. Google sometimes swaps it for another heading on the page, but the title you write is still the starting point.

Why it matters

The title is one of the strongest signals telling search engines what a page is about, and it largely decides whether people click your result. Missing, duplicated or truncated titles hurt both rankings and CTR.

Where you see it in SEOAsist

Technical Audit checks titles on every crawl:

IssueSeverity
Missing title tagSerious
Duplicate titleSerious
Title longer than 60 charactersWarning
Title shorter than 30 charactersWarning

If the site has Site API, the WordPress plugin or Pixel ready, you can close these with Auto-fix in the issue panel; AI writes a unique title for each page. Details: Accept issues as intentional and auto-fix them.

Example

<head>
  <title>Boiler Service Prices 2026 | Handy Heating</title>
</head>

Main keyword first, benefit in the middle, brand at the end; 42 characters in total.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same title, or just the brand name, on every page.
  • Listing keywords with commas into an unreadable title.
  • Going past 60 characters so the important part is cut off in the SERP.
  • A title that doesn't match the content; Google rewrites it and users bounce.
